Performative installation, 2002.
The work explores the situation of a double intrusion. The intrusion of an intimate space into a public one and the intrusion of the public and political into the private.
The first intrusion is realized through the installation inside a labyrinth-like glass structure of a cosy living room on the main public square of Graz, in which a couple is living. During one month and 24 hours a day, different couples alternate living in that space. We initiated this presence on the first week, after which we passed the piece over to other couples.
The vigilance of the couple to the outside world is concentrated on the television broadcasting only sounds of war, without any image, creating thus the second intrusion. These sounds are very violent, difficult to listen to. Outside, in the public space, the sound of a couple quarelling is heard: one reproaches something to the other who answers "I did not know". The intonation clearly indicates that this sentence means in fact "I didn't want to know and I still don't". These voluntary blindness and deafness always remain the best excuse for our passivity.
Passers-by can decide to come in the transparent shelter, reinforcing by that action the bridge between the private and the public spaces. This intertwining of a public space and a private one shows that both spaces are highly porous, and that maintaining major events such as wars into the realm of the unreachable and inexorable entertainment calling for passivity, or seeing home as a self-dependant cell without influence on the outside world, is an obsolete idea.

Le projet I didn't know explore la situation d'une double intrusion : celle d'un espace intime dans l'espace public et celle du public et du politique dans la sphère du privé.
La première intrusion se fait par l'installation dans une structure labyrinthique en verre d'un confortable salon, sur la principale place de Graz. Durant un mois et 24 hrs par jour, des couples alternent pour y vivre. Nous avons initié cette présence durant la première semaine, après quoi nous avons passé le relais à d'autres couples.
La vigilance du couple au monde extérieur est concentrée sur la télévision qui diffuse uniquement des sons de guerre, et de reportages de guerre, sans image : c'est la seconde intrusion. A l'extérieur, dans l'espace public, des haut-parleurs diffusent une dispute de couple : l'un reproche quelquechose à l'autre qui répond systématiquement "qu'il ne savait pas". C'est l'excuse classique pour justifier notre passivité...
Les passants peuvent décider d'entrer dans la structure, renforçant ainsi le lien entre les espaces intime et public. Ce tressage de l'espace public et de l'espace intime montrent qu'il y a porosité entre les deux, et que maintenir des événements majeurs tel que les guerres dans la sphère passive du divertissement inatteignable, ou de voir la "maison" comme une cellule auto-suffisante sans influence sur le monde extérieur, sont des idées obsolètes.
